The movie is about God losing faith in mankind and sending his army of angels to exterminate all man. All of the posessed people were posessed by angels. It is not a war between God and Satan. And Michael goes against God but only because he thinks that mankind should not be exterminated. All angels were taught to love man like God did and Michael didn't want to give up that love to kill them. Ok well thats not what the movie is about.
